Meggie is a twelve year old girl who has never known her mother and has never heard her father read out loud. Meggie and her father are happy, until one fateful night when a man named Dustfinger is out in the yard. From then on, her world is turned upside down, with things from books leaping of the page, and men with knives who also light fires. Her father can read things off pages, nicknamed Silvertongue, and gets captured. Can Meggie save him? Is she another Silvertongue?
